A powerful, heart-warming page-turner by award-winning author Vickie Rubin.

The news that Vickie and Mitch’s daughter had a rare chromosome deletion and, in their scenario, a significant, life-changing diagnosis does not mean the end of their family; it is the beginning of a new and beautiful life.

Vickie’s daughter, Jessica, changed her destiny from a woman with no clear career goals to an experienced mom who became a well-known regional advocate and champion for others, helping thousands of families navigate the special education systems.

Written with compassion, honesty, and humor, it is a beautiful, heartwarming story of family and gives a glimpse into the unique perspectives of parents,  grandparents, and siblings.

Raising Jess: A Story of Hope

Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to personally thank Vickie Rubin for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

WOW!! WOW!! WOW!! Once you start reading Vickie Rubin’s memoir Raising Jess: A Story Of Hope you won’t want to put it down! Vickie opens her heart and shares the ups and downs of Raising Jess. It is a beautifully written book that will educate you, make you smile, educate you, pull on your heart strings and show you how much Jess is loved by everyone she meets!

Instantly, Vickie pulled on my heart strings with what lead up to Jess’s birth! It was that story that left me speechless and needed to know more. It was so good that I finished the book in one sitting! Having a medical background/education I found that part of the book fascinating. However, what I loved even more was the unconditional love that Vickie and her daughter had. Within the stories you could feel how much Jess is loved!

Small world but Jess and I had something in common in that as kids we both attended Robert Warner Rehabilitation Center as kids. I was born with Hemidystrophy (left side of my body is smaller than the right) and scoliosis. We also attended Williamsville High Schools. She went to Williamsville East and I went to Williamsville South.

One thing about Raising Jess is that Vickie included pictures of Jess, family members, friends and caregivers into the book. Not only that but she goes the extra mile and incorporates letters but she included documents too. You can see and feel how much Jess is truly loved by all she meets.

I love how Vickie gave us insight into how her younger siblings felt having grown up with a disabled sister. This part of the story was eye opening for me as I never gave it much thought what my siblings thought of my disability. Nor did I ever wonder how they were affected by the specialized attention I received.

The portion of the book about Bill Mahar had me yelling at my Kindle! Oh I totally agree on how upset Vickie was! I would have been livid too.

Raising Jess: A Story Of Hope is a 5 star read that you need to add to your TBR list.
