EXCERPT:

The music slid over Damon Bradford’s skin like a lover’s caress. He sipped his cocktail, the smooth taste of gin lingering on his tongue. Better to focus on that then the slow, languid heat spreading through his veins as he watched her.

The cellist.

Music had never been an important part of his life. He knew the difference between classical and rock, paid hefty sums for bands and singers to perform at the various functions he hosted throughout the year. But the actual music had always been background noise.

Whereas this…the rich, somber notes of her solo rising and falling with perfect precision, the languid tempo encouraging listeners to slow down, to forget the demands of life for just a moment…

It was unlike anything he’d ever heard before.

Just like the woman behind the cello was unlike anyone he had ever encountered before.

Author Bio:

Emmy's interest in romance can be traced back to her love of Nancy Drew books, when she tried to solve the mysteries of her favorite detective while rereading the romantic chapters with Ned Nickerson. Fast-forward a few years when she discovered a worn copy of "A Rose in Winter" by Kathleen Woodiwiss on her mother's bookshelf, and she was hooked. Over 20 years later, Harlequin Presents made her dream come true by offering her a contract for her first book.

EXCERPT:

“Okay, you wild banshees, costumes are ready to go!” I called up the stairs. Instantly, I heard the pounding of little feet as Lily and Ethan raced down the stairs, with Lily predictably in the lead, eager to transform into their Halloween alter-egos.

“Beware the Headless Horseman!” Lily cried, tossing her hooded cape dramatically over her grinning face. Next to her, Ethan was assembling his white boxy Minecraft costume, complete with pixelated foam sword.

I knelt down and made the final adjustments, securing Ethan’s headpiece and Lily’s belt, then ushered them toward the door. “Let’s hit those sidewalks before all the good candy is gone!” I declared.

It was still light outside when we stepped out onto the porch. Ghosts, superheroes, princesses, and witches were already parading up and down the street as families got the trick-or-treating underway. The crisp air twinkled with magic and excitement as neighbors called out compliments on costumes, and I inhaled the heavenly, smoky scent of burning wood that several people were using to keep warm as they passed out candy.

We weren’t far into our route when I heard rapid footsteps approaching. Lily and Ethan’s faces lit up as Scott and his son came into view dressed in matching blow-up dinosaur costumes. I couldn’t help laughing as I watched their giant dino heads bobble to and fro as they swished toward us.

“Hey, guys!” Scott greeted, slightly out of breath. Since our pumpkin carving hangout, we’d been planning for the kids to do Halloween night trick-or-treating together too. I was relieved he was making it easy for me to take this second opportunity with no strings attached.

“Dad, can we go show Ms. Molly our costumes?” Lily asked eagerly.

I nodded indulgently, enjoying seeing my kids having a good time. After waiting a few moments for Lily, Ethan, and Stanley to run up the walkway to show off their costumes to their principal, we began a slow, easy walk from house to house, stealing pieces of candy here and there, as the kids ran back and forth down driveways and bonded with each other more.

The idea for her first published novel, The Boy under the Table, was so scary that it took a year for her to find the courage to write the emotional story. The Day After The Party

Written By Nicole Trope

Review By Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank Nicole Trope, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review!

WOW!!!! Reading The Day After The Party was like watching a prime time soap opera in my mind!! Nicole Trope really packed on the drama thick with this one! It is not your average psychological thriller, it is way more dark and twisted.

I can’t imagine what Katelyn was going through emotionally, mentally and even physically waking up in an unknown location with no memory of anything that had happened at the party! Like Katelyn I too needed to know what happened at the party!

What I loved most about this book was the education Nicole gave to her readers about transient global amnesia. I found the topic very interesting and how it played a role in The Day After The Party.

So many of these characters rubbed me the wrong way to the point that I was screaming at my Kindle! But with every book there is someone you don’t care for and others you like. My favorites were Harper, Katelyn and Toby!

Her Last Lie
Written By J.S. Lark
Review By Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank J.S. Lark, Bloodhound Books and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review!

Ohh Her Last Lie by J.S. Lark needs to be on the top of your TBR list!! It is everything that I crave in a good psychological thriller and then some! It was fast paced, addicting, heartbreaking, thrilling, suspenseful, and so many wicked twists and turns your head will be spinning!

J.S. 's prologue was the shortest prologue I have ever read to get me hooked into Her Last Lie. However, It worked!! I was hooked and needed to know where she was going with this. I was able to get my answer later in the book.

Oh my heart just broke for Jennifer learning the news about her son dying! I can’t imagine what she was going through! I too would be in denial!! How do you then tell your younger son that his older brother has passed! I totally wanted to hop into the book and give them both a hug!

Her Last Lie’s storyline went into so many directions! Some incredibly important topics that were touched on. Infact, in one of the scenes I felt like I was right there! She was so descriptive and detailed. It was one of the harder scenes to read in the book.

This book would be a great addition to your book club discussion. Infact, J.S. Prepared some questions at the back of the book for her readers.

A Kind of Hush examines how life is seldom a tidy affair exploring whether there is a gray

area between right and wrong. The Mackie family, after enduring an unthinkable tragedy with

the death of their young son, finally moved toward a new life until one June day while enjoying

an outing at a nearby rugged park, their lives again turned upside down. A plunge off a shale cliff

left one parent dead and the other solely responsible for their teenage daughter and seven-year-

old son. Was this an accident or something more heinous, and if so whodunnit and whydunit?

The heart of the novel centers on how each survivor deals with the circumstances and subsequent

revelations surrounding the incident while a mantle of ambiguity – a kind of hush – hangs

between them like a live grenade without its pin.

East Texas author, JoDee Neathery, has written two award-winning novels, Life in a Box, published 2017, and A Kind of Hush released July 2021. Both have won the International Firebird Book Awards for literary fiction and were awarded Readers’ Favorite 5-Star designations. A Kind of Hush received critical acclaim as one of five finalists in the highly contested mystery category of the 16th annual 2022 National Indie Excellence Awards, the 2022 Silver Medal Winner, Readers’ Favorite Annual International Book Awards, Literary Fiction, and was a shortlisted finalist in the 11th annual 2022 Millennium Book Awards and Winner in the literary fiction category

Her journey to publication followed an unconventional path void of author credentials, but with the encouragement of her book club, a passion for the written word, a vivid imagination, a sense of humor, and a story to tell she plucked a few personalities off the family tree and Life in a Box debuted asking the question, how much would you sacrifice to hide a secret. “One of those all too rare literary gems.” Midwest Book Review and a 5-Star review posted on Amazon UK offered this assessment, “There is an understated audacity to her style of writing which I find quite spellbinding.”

A Kind of Hush was born in the middle of the night when the first sentence, the ending, and a profile of a young boy appeared. “I didn’t know the whole story but knew Gabriel Edward Mackie had to be in whatever I wrote next.” Praise followed. “This family drama is steeped in suspense, but its likeable cast of characters is its main draw,” Kirkus Reviews. “Witty, warm, uplifting, and utterly heartbreaking.” Book Viral Review. “Poignant and emotionally rich.” Book View Gold Medallion. “Intelligent, crisp prose.” The Prairies Book Review.

JoDee chairs her community book club, is writing another novel, Dust in the Wind, and contributes a light-hearted look at life with her byline, Back Porch Musings, to a local newspaper. Chapter 1

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room

BUFFALO, NEW YORK. Gabriel Mackie had just celebrated his fourth birthday the first time he visited the whisper room, a windowless enclave with lavender walls brimming with daydreams, obscured from reality. All he knew for certain was that his older brother, Griff, nicknamed Boo, was gone. His bedroom at the end of the long hallway had been transformed into a guest room with ecru lace duvets instead of the blue and white pinstriped spreads covering the twin beds. Vanished were his toy box and New York Yankee American League pennants that had plastered the walls, replaced by paintings of water lilies and wheat fields. A stray tear trickled down Gabes cheek when he remembered Boos curly blonde hair and how he snorted when he laughed. Silence is deafening and the Mackie household screamed heartbreak.

Tree branches dipped in the wind tossing shadows across the windows heralding a tempest gathering force. Matt sipped his coffee and thumbed through last nights restaurant receipts. Summer, lost in her on own thoughts, mindlessly poured herself a refill with one hand while twirling a strand of hair with the other. Gabe tiptoed to the kitchen doorway, jumping back when he heard his mother slam her fist on the counter.

Its Willas fault Griff is gone,” her voice stringent and tight. Tickling him while he sucked on a gumball, for Gods sake. I trusted her to take care of him for fifteen minutes—fifteen damn minutes—while I picked up Gabe from a birthday party. He couldnt find his shoes...I would have been home sooner and maybe...I love my daughter, but...She knew to call 911 in an emergency...Why the hell didnt she?”

Matt shook his head. Summer come on...youve got to quit blaming her,” his voice rising an octave in frustration. Youre as responsible as Willa.”

Summer turned her back to her husband shielding the wounds caused by his words.

shouldnt have said that,” regret echoed in his apology. Im so sorry...Please, we dont need to be playing this blame game....”

I guess its too much to ask for you to understand what Im going through, Matt. What part of my daughter killing our son dont you get?”

Honey, youre overreacting....”

They both turned as Gabe scampered into the room dragging a stuffed elephant by its trunk. Mommy, did Willa find where Boos hiding? Quackers and me wanna play next...you count to ten and say ready-or-not, here I come...okay?”

A Kind of Hush

Written By JoDee Neathery

Review By Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank JoDee Neathery for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

WOW!! JoDee Neathery blew me away with her latest A Kind Of Hush! This book was fast paced, heart wrenching, intensely suspenseful, lots of twists and turns, and totally addicting. This is one book that once you start you won’t want to put down.

I was all smiles when I saw that A Kind Of Hush was set in Buffalo, NY. This is my hometown where I was born, raised and still live. JoDee referenced many prominent locations, sports teams, political figures and even famous OJ Simpson! She also educated her readers on some of Buffalo’s history. Some even I didn’t know about.

Instantly, my heartstrings were pulled tightly meeting 4 year old Gabriel! He was my favorite character of them all as he was the sweetest! My heart broke for all that he lost within this book.

JoDee brings up some very important issues and life lessons in A Kind Of Hush.

A Kind Of Hush is incredibly well written that will have you on the edge of your comfy chair. It is one book you must add to your TBR list!
