A moving personal narrative from Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria star Eric Dane, on the most impactful days—past, present, and future—of his life.
In 2006, Eric Dane guest starred on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, a moment that would change his life. What was intended to be a one-time guest appearance, landed him a regular role on the Emmy nominated show and would launch his acting career, leading to other roles in hit series like The Last Ship and Euphoria.
Years later, Dane experienced another life-changing moment: being diagnosed with ALS. The sudden diagnosis caused him to slow down and reflect on the moments that had shaped him. In My Book of Days, Dane shares these reflections and invites readers to do the same with their lives.
Told through a series of “days” that each illuminate a defining experience or emotional truth, My Book of Days captures everything from the grind of his early years in Hollywood and the hard-won peace of sobriety to the profound clarity that came with his ALS diagnosis. With his newfound perspective that our days are all we truly have, Dane reflects on the beauty and weight of each one—on the joy, the pain, the lessons, and the grace found in simply being present. Dane also looks beyond his lifetime to the “future days” that would come after he was gone—days meant for his daughters to read, to remember, and to carry forward. He leaves behind not just a record of his life, but a lasting guide to cherishing time itself: a reminder that while most of us don’t think in days, we should, because each day is both a story and a gift.
Poignant, vulnerable and deeply human, My Book of Days is a profound meditation on the passing of time and what matters most when you’re looking at life through the lens of a terminal illness.
Ohh how I was totally in love with Eric Dane’s character McSteamy on Grey’s Anatomy!! I can remember every time I had to be in the hospital for some reason or another wondering why the dr’s were not as good looking as him! Needless to say I was crushed when he was killed off the show! However, nothing prepared me for learning he was diagnosed at an early age of ALS, the same disease that killed my cousin Kevin years ago. Of all the celebrity deaths this one I took the hardest. He was so young! My heart just broke for his ex wife Rebecca and his two daughters. When I learned he was writing his memoir My Book of Days A Memoir of Moments I knew I needed to read it. I am so glad that I did. Warning though you may need a few tissues handy like I did.
This book is dedicated to Eric’s daughters Billie and Georgia. He wishes he could have given you everything in the universe, and the stars in the heavens.
Eric pulls hard on my heart strings fast with his first chapter as tears well up! Thinking to myself I’m glad I have a box of tissues nearby!
Eric bravely opens up and shares with us the first time he noticed something was not quite right with his hand using chopsticks. From there he shares the ups and downs of finding out the true diagnosis of ALS.
One part I loved about this book is that Eric wrote about his love story with Rebecca and how they met, their first date, their engagement, their wedding, and the births of their daughters. He loved those girls so much!!
It was cute how every now and then he gave words of wisdom to his girls of what not to do! I had to chuckle at some of them.
As I stated earlier I am a huge fan of Grey’s Anatomy so I loved learning that he was only to be on one show! We should be thanking Rebecca for pushing him to talk him into being on the show! I loved what he had to say about his experience on the show.
What I didn’t realize is what other tv shows he was on prior to Grey’s like Charmed (which I watched but not religiously)
Eric opens up about stories from the past when he was growing up.
Eric shared with us that he had to be strong when his father passed away. However, the day he died so did a part of Eric. I can relate as the day my Dad died 2 years ago I did too. Years later he found out his father committed suicide. Tragedy struck again when his Grandmother passed.
I love how even though Eric has been through some dark stuff (and he has) he always tries to find the funny in life!
Eric Dane will be missed by many! This is a must read book! I devoured it it in one night!
