Peter Valdez III and his wife, Tasche Laine (a multi-genre author), collaborated on their first children’s book, Get Up, Lil Peter. Get Up!, to pay tribute to Peter’s grandfather. The oldest of 29 grandchildren, Peter was nicknamed ‘Lil Peter’ to differentiate him from his father and grandfather. Each story in the series is told with a message or lesson that impacted Peter’s life as a child, and grounded him as an adult.
Peter was born and raised in and around the Los Angeles area, in California. He currently resides in the Pacific Northwest with Tasche and their puppy, Story. He still enjoys playing soccer every chance he gets.

Mei Mei Leonard is an Oregonian illustrator and animator. She graduated from PNCA (Pacific Northwest College of Art) in 2020 with a BFA in animation.
Although her work is primarily digital now, she has a great fondness for traditional pencils and inks. She enjoys fairytales, and general childhood whimsy in the things she draws, but is not one to shy away from serious topics.
When working, Mei Mei favors character design and fleshing out a character’s personality—whether from their clothes, their expressions, or their movement. Her dream is to one day publish her own series of graphic novels (Internet, hard copy, or both)! She is new to the picture book scene, and revels in exploring the new opportunities and challenges.

First I want to thank Peter Valdez, Tasche Laine, Mei Mei Leonard, and Skye Blue Press for this book so I can bring you this review.
Aww Smile Lil Peter It’s A Gift written by Peter Valdez, Tasche Laine and Mei Mei Leonard surely put a big smile on my face! It was one of the sweetest Christmas stories I have read this year that had a very special message in it. One that will make not only children rethink things but adults as well. I highly recommend this book for your Christmas reading list this year.
Peter would like to dedicate this book in memory of Phyllis Conrad, his spiritual Grandmother who has taught him many lessons over the years. She was a kind generous giver from the heart. She spreaded joy and happiness to all she met.
Reading Smile Lil Peter It’s A Gift got me thinking of my late Gram and all the fun things we used to do at Christmas time. Now I am blessed to see my Mom be GG to my Nieces and Nephews and that puts a smile on my face and love in my heart.
Both Tasche and Peter make an incredible writing team as all their stories are fun and enjoyable to read. However, most importantly they all have a very important message within them if you look closely. This book actually had a few in them. One of those tidbits of knowledge I didn’t know. So you see they even taught me something new!
Mei Mei Leonard makes Peter and Tasche’s book come alive with her beautiful, fun, colorful, and detailed illustrations. The three of them make an amazing team when they all combine their creative skills.
At the end of this book Mei Mei put together a little surprise activity for you to enjoy doing together.
