 A Good Enough Mother

Mia is telling me a story. It’s about a princess, who lives in a castle, on a street that bears a remarkable resemblance to ours. About a kind old lady who’s the queen. I’m distracted for a moment by her little hand softly slipping into mine. My daughter. My angel.

But then she says something that pulls me from my reverie. She says that the queen doesn’t treat the princess well. She punishes her and doesn’t let her eat anything…

Helen, my neighbour, has been so good to me. And more importantly, she’s so good with the children. Surely this is just another story of Mia’s, just make believe.

Because if it’s not, maybe my dad was right all along: I was never good enough to be a mother, and I’ve let my precious children down in the worst way possible.

A heartbreaking and uplifting story about the choices a mother makes for the sake of her children, perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Emma Robinson and Kate Hewitt.

A Good Enough Mother

Written By Sheila Norton

Review By Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank Sheila Norton, Boldwood Books, NetGalley and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Ohh how I was looking forward to reading A Good Enough Mother by Sheila Norton. The cover graphics and the title drew me in instantly. Never had I read from this author before however she was compared to one of my faves Emma Robinson. Needless to say, I just had to read this book.

I love books that hook you instantly and pull you in right away. Unfortunately, A Good Enough Mother did not do this for me. Infact, it was a while until I really got into it and it started getting good.

The kids in this book were adorable! I chuckled at the way they said certain things and the mother kept correcting them. I remember my Father doing that to me as a kid and sometimes even now as an adult.

There was a really cute storyline regarding a boy calling wolf. The conversation the little girl had with her Mom was just so adorable. However, this topic was repetitive in this book. At one point I found myself getting frustrated and said out loud ok we get the message loud and clear.

I often wondered within the book why the Mom was dead against having the kids see their Father. It was a story that slowly built up throughout the book. Never, in a million years did I see the reason why.

Honestly, I hate to say this was not my favorite book. That doesn’t mean that it won’t be yours. That being said I would give it a try.

Can You Keep a Secret?

One New Year’s Eve, Georgie James and her friends come up with a genius plan to help them stick to their resolutions… They all write down secrets, seal them in envelopes and then post them to each other. The secrets will be revealed at the end of the year if they haven’t kept their resolutions.

It’s perfect. Except…

Georgie's secret is BIG... and revealing it could destroy their friendships. She has no idea why she chose that one to write down. There are plenty of innocent things she could have said – even admitting she finds newcomer Raf incredibly annoying would have been better.

What she does know is that there’s no way she can let her secret be revealed. Which means she needs to keep her (nightmare) resolutions and, most importantly, get her envelope back before anyone can open it. Which, given she sent her secret to Raf, means spending a lot more time with him than she’d choose to...

A heartwarming romantic comedy for fans of Beth O’Leary and Mhairi McFarlane

Jo Lovett’s newest book Can You Keep A Secret was a fun read that right off the bat put a smile on my face.

I absolutely adored all the unique out of the box character names she picked out.

Can You Keep A Secret's biggest theme in this book is friendship. Their banter back and forth had me cracking up laughing at times.

The New Years Eve Resolutions game idea was a unique aspect to the book that I liked.

As with most books there are twists, turns and shocking moments.

 Tour Wars

Ten days, two rivals, and a busload of tourists. How bad could it be?

For archaeologist Emilia Flores, landing a fellowship to work at the ancient ruins of Pompeii in Italy is a dream come true. The only catch? She’ll be digging alongside her infuriating nemesis, TJ Mayer, who’s been a constant thorn in her side.

TJ isn’t about to pass up the Pompeii project. Sure, he’ll be stuck working with Emilia, but he thrives on challenging her. And he hasn’t forgotten that secret kiss they shared at an archaeology conference last winter.

Though unearthing Pompeii’s treasures might be a dream, student debt is a nightmare that never takes a vacation. So, when TJ and Emilia are offered a lucrative side job to lead a ten-day tour through Southern Italy, they grudgingly agree to tackle it together.

Forced to set aside their animosity and work as a team, they forge an unexpected camaraderie. As the sparks between them ignite, their rivalry gives way to passion, making it easy to forget their years of fierce competition. But what happens when the tour ends and the real world steps in?

Tour Wars is a rivals-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine romance featuring a nerdy cinnamon roll hero, a strong-willed Latina heroine, and plenty of hotel hijinks.

Darcy vanished thirteen years ago. Today, she’s coming home.

Darcy Drummond was four when she was kidnapped on a crowded beach. A massive police search and media frenzy followed but the girl was never found. Most people gave Darcy up for dead. Or worse.

Then, one fateful night, she walks into a police station. Seventeen years old. A chance to start over.

As the world celebrates Darcy’s return, Margo Martin, journalist and friend of the Drummond family, receives a strange phone call. A call which leads her step-by-step towards a horrifying revelation…

The real reason for Darcy’s disappearance is a long-kept secret. A secret so shocking, so unexpected that it will plunge the Drummond family into a nightmare they will struggle to survive.

Mark Gillespie writes psychological thriller and suspense novels. He’s a former professional musician (bass player) from Glasgow, Scotland who spent ten years touring the UK and Ireland, playing sessions and having the time of his life. Don’t ask though. What happened on the road stays on the road.

He now lives in Auckland, New Zealand with his wife and a small menagerie of rescue creatures. If he’s not writing, he’s jamming with other musicians, running on the beach, watching mixed martial arts and boxing. Or devouring horror and thriller movies.

The Lost Girl
Written By Mark Gillespie
Review By Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank Mark Gillespie, Inkubator Books, Zooloo Book Tours, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

The Lost Girl written by Mark Gillespie is a storyline that could be ripped from the headlines! Oh this book is every parent's worst nightmare with a totally unbelievable jaw dropping ending!

Mark’s book started out fast paced and quite interesting as Darcy went missing. Obviously, my heart broke for her parents during this time. Then we fast forward in time when both the readers and the parents find out Darcy may be alive. I had just as many questions surrounding her disappearance, what really happened to her, and who had her for all of these years. I eventually got my answers but was not expecting the outcome.

The author broke up the book in four parts with individual chapters in each part. In my honest opinion he could have written each part as a separate book. This way he could focus more on each individual chapter.

Even though I enjoyed this book there were parts of this book that I felt dragged on a little longer than they should have.
