“What are you doing?”
I turned at the sound of the tiny male voice over my shoulder. Of all the people I expected to talk to me in this neighborhood, I hadn’t expected this kid to be one of them.
“Fixing my bike.”
“What’s wrong with it?”
“Everything,” I grunted.
“If everything’s wrong with it, why don’t you buy a new one?”
Dropping my tool, I got off the bucket I was using for a seat and snatched the rag off the seat of the bike. Wiping my hands, I stared down at the kid who couldn’t be more than five years old. With a mop of brown hair on the top of his head and blue eyes that matched his mama’s, it was hard to see how he was related to Rico at all. He didn’t look a thing like him, which was probably for the best.
“Where’s your mama?”
“In the house,” he said, wiping his nose on the sleeve of his shirt. “She’s mad because she didn’t hear her alarm go off. She said she’s late and her boss is going to yell at her a lot.”
“Yeah? What does she do?”
“She’s a nurse at the hospital.”
This kid had to be older than I thought. The way he spoke—it didn’t sound like any five-year-old I knew. Not that I knew many of them. “How old are you?”
“Four!” he beamed, holding out four fingers proudly. “I’ll be five in two months!”
My eyebrows shot up in surprise. This kid was only four? He spoke clearly, with not even a hint of uncertainty about what he was saying.
“Why don’t you buy a new bike?”
“Because I don’t want a new bike.”
“But a new bike would be prettier.”
“I like the work that goes into fixing up a bike,” I countered.
He sighed heavily, shaking his head as he stared at the heap behind me. “That’s a lot of work.”
“Yeah. You know something about it?”
He swiped at his nose again, shaking his head. “No.”
“Have you ever been around a bike?”
He shook his head again, but then his eyes lit up. “I have a monster truck, though.”
“That’s pretty cool.”
The screen door on his house banged shut as his mom came running out. She wasn’t dressed in scrubs, though. She was donning a blue EMT outfit. Maybe the kid had it mixed up.
Her eyes scanned the yard for her son and the panic was evident when she saw he wasn’t by her car. Then her eyes landed on me and the panic turned to fear. I didn’t like the gnawing feeling in my gut from that look, but I shoved it down. It wasn’t my job to make friends with her, and any involvement would only make my life harder.
“Parker!” she shouted, rushing over to him. She pulled him against her, keeping her hands firmly locked around his shoulders. “You can’t wander off. I told you not to go outside.”
“I was looking at his bike,” Parker answered.
“I didn’t know where you were. You scared me.”

From the bestselling author of The Secret Mother, a chilling tale about revisiting the past—and digging up secrets you’d rather forget.

The invitation to her school reunion couldn’t have come at a better time for Chloe Flynn. Divorced, broke and bored at work, she’s living a life her teenage self would hate. Turning the clock back fifteen years might be just what she needs to wipe the slate clean and start again. And then there’s the chance she’ll bump into Nathan Blake, the one she still regrets letting get away…

Back at her elite private school, Chloe sparkles as she reunites with old friends and long-forgotten love interests. And then, just as she’d hoped, there’s Nathan, more handsome than ever before. Even better, he’s single too, and seems to be just as keen to make up for lost time…

But as the evening progresses, Chloe can’t help feeling that something’s not quite right—that she’s not the only one who’s come here for more than just a party. When the secrets of the past start to emerge and the reunion takes a sinister turn, it’s clear that nothing is what it seems—and nothing will be the same again.

Odd Mom Out

Life just got life-y…

On the night that Trudy Asp discovers her ex is engaged to the same dental hygienist who’s been picking at her teeth for ten years, her daughter, Madison, suddenly announces that she too is getting married, in Europe.

Frumpy, floundering, and forced to live with her martini-swilling mother, Trudy is swamped by these revelations. And on top of it all, she’ll be wearing the second most scrutinized gown at the wedding.

Having packed on the pounds during the demise of her marriage, the idea of being eyeballed by her ex and his scrawny fiancΓ©e Zelda, is truly horrifying. To make matters worse, there’s the paralyzing fear of a transatlantic flight — something Trudy has avoided for decades.

“You’re having twins!” Becca runs her hand over my huge pregnant belly. It sends shivers down my spine. There’s something off about her smile. And now she’s living in my home…
When my husband
Seth and I bought our perfect home, all I wanted was a chance to start a loving family—the one thing I never had. And all our dreams come true when I get pregnant with twins. But we had no idea financial ruin was just around the corner. Desperate to keep our heads above water, we have no choice but to take in lodgers.
Becca, Jules and Zoe are dream roommates. So why do I feel so uneasy when Seth leaves me alone with them? Maybe it’s because I keep catching Becca and Jules in places they shouldn’t be. And Zoe says she knows my mother—the toxic woman whose influence I still feel every day.
Maybe I’m just imagining things. Perhaps I’m like my mother after all—paranoid and delusional. She’s too sick to look after herself without help. I need to pull it together. I can’t end up like her.
But when I start to see dark shadows moving behind my bedroom door at night, I can’t shake thesickening feeling that
someone is watching me.
I start to eavesdrop on their conversations. And what I hear makes my blood run cold.
They aren’t who they say they are. And I think I’ve put my unborn babies in deadly danger by inviting these strangers into my home…
An utterly gripping and twisty psychological thriller that will keep you turning the pages until the jaw-dropping end. Fans of Sue WatsonFreida McFadden and K.L Slater won’t be able to put this down!
