A Driver’s Ed scandal. Family issues at home. V is on the case again, even if it’s just to get out of the house.

V is fifteen and can’t wait to learn how to drive. But her parents are too busy with their own problems to bother to teach her. So when a guy at school tells her about a new driver’s training course, she doesn’t hesitate to sign up, even if it sounds a little shady. A rash of break-ins hit the neighborhood, and the Driver’s Ed teacher seems to have something to do with it. V is asked to call on her novice detective skills once again.

Now that her mom’s cancer is in remission and her best friend is back, will V be able to live a normal teenage life? Or will she get in over her head, sucked into a case beyond anything she could possibly imagine?

Bright Stars picks up a year after Glass Stars, in the Chronicles of V, a young adult contemporary fiction series. If you like gutsy teen detectives, à la Veronica Mars or Nancy Drew, you’ll love Tasche Laine’s page-turning adventure.

Not Noah. Not my husband. But there he is, unconscious in the hospital bed. Our daughter sobs into my shoulder. We love him so much. What if he never wakes up? And who is the little girl beside him, gazing up at us with big, tear-filled brown eyes? Eyes that look just like my husband’s…

Our family of three is perfect. Just me, Noah and our teenage daughter Maya. The day the police knock at our door, telling us about the car accident, is the worst day of my life. My heart shatters, but what they say next almost makes it stop beating: Noah was in the car with another woman who died at the scene. Her two-year-old girl,
Luna, miraculously survived.

With Noah fighting for his life, I’m desperate for the truth: and when I search his desk, I find checks made out to Luna’s mother.

Growing up in the digital age, with the pressures of social media and increasingly competitive academics, Alayna’s perfectionism started early in life. She began to despise her body after a pre-teen wellness check when the physician told her to “lay off the snacks” and watch her weight. At age 16, Alayna was diagnosed with anorexia. She was three weeks from being sent to an in-patient treatment center when she decided to take charge of her life.

Plagued with body dysmorphia beginning at six years old, Melissa came of age in the diet culture of the 1970s and 1980s when fad diets, diet pills, and at-home exercise equipment dominated the golden age of advertising. Melissa was diagnosed with bulimia when she was 16 and her treatment included both inpatient and intensive outpatient programs over five years. After a series of traumatic events, she struggled with anorexia in her thirties.

Lynne Renoir was born into a fundamentalist Christian family where the Bible was the central focus. She was not allowed to make mistakes or to challenge her father’s opinions. Such behavior, in his view, was the work of Satan. As God’s representative in the family, her father believed it was his duty to belt the devil out of his daughter, and he did so regularly and severely.

When the beatings continued into her twenties, Lynne finally broke free. Convinced she was a failure as a believer, she left home, and for several decades she endeavored to live by the tenets of the faith in which she had been raised.

Then when she was fifty, Lynne had an amazing experience of communication with beings in the spirit world. Under their guidance she completed a Master’s degree in Psychology and a PhD in Philosophy. She then investigated quantum theory and mysticism, coming to the conclusion that everything in the universe is one. This led her to question the idea of an external, all-powerful being who sits in judgment on his creatures.

We all face trials, tough times, trauma, and loss, and it seems like the older I get, the more this becomes evident. After my mother lost her hard-fought battle with cancer, I thought I would never smile or be happy again. The pain was raw, and my heart felt empty. I am still healing after almost a decade, but I have learned so much in the process. My mom was a faithful Christian that loved Jesus and I know I will see her again someday, but that doesn't make me miss her any less.

Every day we are given reminders that things are going to be all right, but most of the time we are too busy, and life is too crazy to notice them. When I am quiet and purposely looking, I can see these little reminders all around me in my daily life. Sometimes, it's a gentle reminder that makes me grin, and other times it's a reminder that stops me in my tracks and has me overcome with emotions.
