As I hand my newborn baby to my mother, I see the softness in her face as she gazes down at the tiny, helpless girl in her arms. And I feel my heart shatter as I say the words that will change all our lives… ‘Please, take my baby.’

I know she will be better off without me.
But as I leave her behind that dark night, I wonder, will I ever see my baby again?

Will I have the chance to explain to little Erin why I had to go? Even if I do find the strength to return, what will my mother have told her?

Only one person really knows what happened, and why I had to do what I did.

I know the truth will come out some day. I don’t expect forgiveness. The only thing I hope is that my family can survive the fallout…

A heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting tale about the sacrifices mothers make for their children, this story will make you hold your loved ones tight. Perfect for fans of Jodi Picoult, Jojo Moyes and Kate Hewitt.

Please Take My Baby
Written By Emma Robinson
Review By Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank Emma Robinson, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

Ohh Emma Robinson I have been craving one of your books for a while! With every book you write you seem to pull on my heart strings! I have learned the hard way not to read your books in public as I start tearing up! Once again you outdid yourself and exceeded my expectations with Please Take My Baby.

Please Take My Baby had a lot of shocking twists and mind blowing revelations that left me speechless. Oh and you know it would not be an Emma book without the heartbreak!

One thing I love about Emma’s books is you make your characters relatable and real. In Please Take My Baby you focused an issue and brought awareness to Dementia. I can relate to this storyline as my Aunt suffered from it. It was very difficult to see her decline in memory and health as the years went on. So many times my heart just aches reading this part of the storyline.

EXCERPT:

He could do this. Play nice and dig deep to dredge up the charm that used to come to him so easily. He’d unearthed it anytime a food critic or reporter came to town interested in reviewing the restaurant. If he thought of the woman as someone he needed to impress, like a critic, then maybe it would be easier to get through the next few days.

What were four measly days in the grand scheme of things, anyway?

Just nearly a hundred hours of misery. Pure misery.

Nothing to worry about, he thought derisively.

Scoffing, he removed the sauce from the heat and set it aside. Owen glanced at the clock. Time was growing short before Miss Young arrived. If he hurried, he could whip up the sour cream lemon blueberry Bundt cakes he planned to offer for dessert that evening. He’d already made strawberry pudding that would be served with shortbread squares and fresh whipped cream topped with candied lime peel.

Determined to have the cakes baking before Miss Young messed up his afternoon, he rushed to mix the ingredients and was just sliding the last cake pan into the oven when he heard Mayor Mitchell Kane speaking to someone as they entered through the back door.

Owen really needed to get a keypad lock back there one of these days. Grumbles drifted under his breath as he set the timer for the cakes, quickly washed his hands, and turned with a towel in his wet hands to greet the interloper who was about to completely upset his schedule for the next four days.

Despite what Nate had mentioned about her not being too hard on the eyes, Owen wasn’t prepared for the woman who stepped into the kitchen with Mitch. His hands stilled, clenching the towel as he took in her appearance.

Dark brown hair flowed over her shoulders in thick, chunky waves. Apple cheeks tinged with pink, lips that appeared entirely too kissable, and the slightest smattering of freckles on her nose gave her a girl-next-door vibe. Pretty brown eyes sparkled like fizzy root beer but looked intelligent and interested when their gazes connected.

The mayor helped her remove her coat, and Owen’s mouth went dry at the sight of her curvaceous figure. He sucked in a breath and inhaled a delightful floral fragrance that tantalized his nose.

What was he supposed to do with this beautiful being when he’d been expecting a middle-aged foodie with money as expandable as her waistline?

This was even worse than he’d envisioned. He had no time for distractions like Tawni Young, who certainly lived up to her name. She looked young. Fresh-faced. Yet the name Tawni made him think of a jungle cat and something that held a great deal of danger.

If the attraction he felt to her was any indication, she was going to be nothing but trouble to him.

The Mechanics of Lust
Jay Hogan
(Mackenzie Country, #2)
Publication date: October 19th 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Western

I broke the rules and fell in love with my best friend. Newsflash—he didn’t feel the same. I had to stand by and watch him fall for someone else. Moving on hasn’t been easy since we all live and work on the same high country sheep station, but I’m finally getting there.

I’m building a new life, a new set of dreams, planning a different future, just me and my dogs. The last thing I need is Luke Nichols, the sexy, enigmatic, ex-husband of my nemesis, filling my head with a laundry list of cravings. Talk about complicated.

Luke is only in Mackenzie Country for a few months and I’m not about to put my heart on the line again just for a little fun. But the more I’m around Luke, the harder it is to remember exactly why Luke and I are a bad idea, the worst idea.

Things between us are about to go nuclear.

Maybe I’m wrong.
Maybe we can keep it simple.
Maybe I can satisfy my cravings and hold on to my heart.
And maybe pigs can fly.

This story contains references to the past loss of a child.

EXCERPT:

“Speech, speech!” A slow clap reverberated off the faded walls of the Oakwood pub’s back bar, which locals had affectionately named The Fleece.

I put my back to the wooden bar and watched a furiously blushing Gil throw Holden a withering, you-are-in-so-much-trouble glare before stepping onto the small stage. He surveyed the crowd from under the Happy Fortieth Birthday banner, which had taken four of us an embarrassing amount of time and a few beers to finally get in place.

I was amazed we’d managed to keep the surprise party a secret, but somehow we’d done it, and Gil had been stunned, tearful, and touchingly overwhelmed when he’d walked into the packed bar to a loud chorus of happy birthday that rattled the rafters.

As I listened to his emotional thank you to everyone who’d turned up to celebrate, including some of his friends who’d flown in from Wellington, it was hard not to be charmed by the man. Not quite a year in the district and Gil’s name was almost as synonymous with Miller Station as Holden’s. This was partly due to their gay-couple status, but also because of the run of free seminars Gil had begun offering locally on grief, stress management, and rural mental health. The result was a bar chocka with birthday well-wishers.

And I was one of them.

Cue the shocked gasps of disbelief.

Keeping my eyes on Gil, I shuffled sideways to let a man in at the bar behind me.

“We must stop meeting like this.” The gravelly voice sent a shiver down my spine, and I turned to find a familiar pair of blue eyes dancing over my face.

Luke Nichols. Dammit.

Luke flashed that wicked smile that always made my dick sit up and pay attention and just, damn my bad luck. The man smelled of Tom Ford, summer, and trouble, and I cursed the familiar tingling sensation his proximity always managed to induce in my body. A fact that only strengthened my resolve to make sure he caught my eye roll. He did. But the amused smirk he returned my way didn’t help matters.

“Well, look who the cat dragged in.” I tried not to lean in for another waft of that expensive cologne. “Guess there’s no show without Punch, right?”

Luke gave an amused snort. “I guess not.” His gaze raked over me, head to foot, before he turned his attention to the small stage where Gil was winding up his speech. “Ah, the birthday boy.”

I followed Luke’s gaze, pretending to listen while shooting covert glances back his way because . . . well, because I was an idiot. And because he looked so fucking edible. Dressed in dark-wash jeans paired with a crisp white shirt—open at the neck and with the cuffs rolled up to reveal the green silicone wristband he always wore—Luke looked annoyingly cool as a cucumber in the late January heat that had the rest of us layering on the deodorant.

Smelling fresh from the shower, Luke brushed a stray lock of dirty blond hair back into place in a way that made me want to shove a hat over my own shaggy, auburn waves. A woven black leather cord hung around his neck and disappeared under his shirt, and a pair of trendy black loafers poked out from the bottom of his jeans. It pained me to admit it, but the man was effortlessly chic.

Enough already. I refocused on Gil who was gesturing to Holden to join him on the small stage.

“Get up here, baby.” Gil drew Holden in for a long, slow kiss that had the birthday crowd whooping and wolf-whistling.

I waited for the once familiar knot of jealousy in my chest, but it never came. Wistful? Sure. Envious of what they had? Absolutely. But jealous still? I thought about it again. No. Maybe I was fooling myself, but I was going to take that for a win.

Luke leaned in close. “Does this feel as weird for you as it does for me?”

I glanced over my shoulder. “I’ve no idea what you mean,” I lied.

His lips twitched in an almost smile that I chose to ignore. “Oh really?” he asked sardonically. “Because here we are, you and me, at a party celebrating my ex-husband’s birthday, thrown by his new love who just happens to be your best friend slash ex. One could be forgiven for saying it’s a bit of a mindfuck, right?”

When I didn’t answer, he elbowed me gently. “Oh, come on. A little conversation won’t kill you.”

I huffed. “Says you.” I was being a dick and we both knew it, but that was par for the course as far as things between us went.

To be fair, Luke had attempted to build a bridge many times since our inauspicious first meeting. He’d arrived uninvited at the station the year before in an attempt to force Gil to talk and I’d been . . . less than welcoming. I might not have liked Gil much at that time, and I still didn’t know the whole story of what had happened between them, but to walk out on your husband six months after your daughter was killed in a car accident? The rest of Miller Station might have found a way to gloss over that fact and forgive him, even Gil. But as far as I was concerned, how much more did you really need to know about a guy?

Not to mention, getting all buddy-buddy with the man would’ve meant having . . . conversations and likely being paired up to work when he helped out on the station. The problem was that any proximity to Luke brought with it a minefield of potential disaster best avoided.

Luke was sexy as shit and his obvious interest in me might fizz in those wicked blue eyes. But he was trouble with a capital T, and I wanted no part of him for too many reasons to list. Although if I did happen to list them, right at the top would be the fact that my body lit up like a Christmas tree every time the man came within spitting distance.

Not since those first times with Holden had I felt anything like that.

Maybe not even then, and that fact just plain pissed me off.

Too bad I was done with complicated men.

 The Puppet Maker

The scrap of paper looked as if it had been torn from a diary. The words written in faint pencil. The letters rounded, almost childlike: Please look after her. Her life and mine depend on you not trying to find me

When Detective Alana Mack arrives at Clonabee police station, in a small Irish seaside town on the outskirts of Dublin, she doesn't expect to find a distressed two-year-old girl sobbing on the floor. Abandoned in a local supermarket, the child tells them her name is Casey. All Alana and her team have to go on is a crumpled note begging for someone to look after her little girl. This mother doesn't want to be found.

Still recovering from a terrible accident that has left Alana navigating a new life as a wheelchair user, Alana finds herself suddenly responsible for Casey while trying to track down the missing mother and solve another missing person's case… a retired newsagent who has seemingly vanished from his home.

Forced to ask her ex-husband and child psychiatrist Colm for help, through Forensic Art Therapy, Alana discovers that whatever darkness lies behind the black windows in Casey's crayon drawing, the little girl was terrified of the house she lived in.

Then a bag of human remains is found in a bin, and a chilling link is made – the DNA matches Casey's.

Alana and her team must find the body and make the connection with the missing newsagent fast if she is to prevent another life from being taken. But with someone in her department leaking confidential details of the investigation to the media, can Alana set aside her emotional involvement in this case and find Casey’s mother and the killer before it's too late?

Heart-pounding and totally addictive, The Puppet Maker is the first in the Detective Alana Mack series that will have fans of Ann Cleeves, Angela Marsons and LJ Ross racing through the pages late into the night.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Eleven hours ago, Stella Fisher was on the other side of the Atlantic.

The day before, after a long day of research at London’s St. Thomas’ Hospital, she’d hurried into the old market building in Covent Garden, weaving through the Christmas crowds. Under the festive bunting of British flags, she dipped into a coffee shop for a decaf latte to combat the cold December temperatures. Then with the hot beverage in hand, her boots clacking along the cobblestones, she rushed past the massive Christmas tree in the square, barely glancing at it as she headed for the station.

Her laptop bag slung across her body, she stole sips from her latte as she swept through the corridors and down the escalator of the underground to grab the Tube back to the edge of the city. She was ready to get home to relax and warm up, unaware that the next morning she’d be on a crowded flight out of the country.

When she’d finally arrived at 27 Finchley Road, the serene little flat where she’d been staying, she’d dropped her things just inside the door. She set her half-empty cup on the kitchen table that she’d also been using as a desk because it overlooked a charming back garden. Then she went over to the window, taking in the frosty hedges that sparkled under the fading light of an unusually clear winter sky and the curved flowerbeds that were sure to have blossoms in the spring. Unlike her cramped New York apartment, this flat gave Stella an indescribable feeling of comfort after her long hours in the busy city.

She sank down into the velvety sofa. With a groan, she unzipped her boots and wriggled her sore toes. Her feet had not acclimated to London life as well as the rest of her. They couldn’t quite get used to the manic pace, sprinting around all day.

Being by herself was oddly quiet following the daily bustle, and it always took her some time to get used to it, in whichever city she’d been in over the last eight years. At first, the silence had bothered her, but gradually it had become a vital part of her day, giving her space and time to work through her thoughts.

That night, however, she didn’t have much time to rest before her mother, Anna Fisher, called from Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee, asking her to come home.

Now Stella was sprinting again, but this time down the sprawling, shiny floors of Atlanta’s airport, trying to manage the ridiculously short gap between flights for her connection to Nashville, the final leg of her journey. Having spent two hours at Heathrow, and nine and half hours in the air, she was too tired and starving to notice her surroundings, and in too much of a hurry to pause. She had to get to the gate first and then see if she had time to grab a bite to eat. Her carry-ons dangled from her aching shoulder like two boulders as she pushed through the colossal holiday crowds, gripping her boarding pass.

She was making good progress, maneuvering skillfully around groups of people while checking her phone. The texts that had piled up during her flight were now pinging one after another since she’d regained cell service. One was from her mother, asking when she should pick her up, and another was from her sister, Lily, that simply said, “Hey.”

She texted her mother her arrival time, adding that she was headed toward her connection and would see her in a few hours. Her next two texts were to her sister, but both said they were undeliverable. She sighed. Airport Wi-Fi… Just as she thought she might have enough time to grab a magazine and a muffin at the terminal shop—whack—she was on the floor, covered in burning coffee.

“Oh, my gosh, I’m so sorry,” a woman said as she picked up a dripping paper cup and helped Stella to her feet. “I was searching for my hand lotion inside my bag and not looking where I was going. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” Stella said, checking her boarding pass to make sure it was still legible. She tugged at her saturated shirt, the coffee seeping all the way through to her skin and making her smell of caramel. “I was paying attention to my phone and not looking either. It could easily have been my fault too.”

“I’ll get us some napkins,” the woman said, shaking her head in bewilderment. But then she stopped short, bending down. “Oh, you almost lost this.” She picked up a silver necklace with a blue stone pendant and held it out in her fist. “That would’ve been just terrible.” She took Stella’s hand and thrust the necklace into it.

“This isn’t—” Stella tried to tell the woman the necklace wasn’t hers, but the woman was already running from shop to shop, asking for napkins. Stella looked around frantically to see if anyone seemed to have lost a necklace, but everyone was striding past her at a clip, not a soul looking as if they’d misplaced something.

Then the flight information display rolled over with an update, and she realized she only had fifteen minutes to catch her flight. Seeing the freezing drizzle glittering on the planes out the window, she knew she could be stuck there for the night if she didn’t get to her gate in time. With zero minutes to spare and not wanting to abandon the necklace for fear it would get swept into the trash, she shoved it into her pocket and dashed off.

When she finally skidded to a stop at her destination, she was the final passenger to board.

“Ah, you only just made it,” the perky flight attendant said, her red lips curling into a smile. Then she announced the final call into the handset intercom receiver as she reached out for Stella’s boarding pass.

Sticky and out of breath, Stella handed the stained paper to the woman who scanned it and gave it back to her. Then she rushed down the passenger bridge, onto the plane, and toward her seat. She wedged her bags in the nearest overhead bin with available space and squeezed herself between an elderly woman with an overpowering scent of roses and powder, and a teenager who was already slouched in his seat, hoodie over his eyes, earbuds in.

The plane started to taxi down the runway, and the crew began their pre-flight safety demonstration. Stella settled in, leaned her head back, and closed her eyes. Soon the engines whirred to full speed, pressure pushing her torso against the seat, and rousing her back to consciousness. The plane lifted into the heavens, and with a shift to the right, she caught the view out the window over the teenager’s shoulder. Atlanta shrank to a patch of green beneath them.

When she arrived in Nashville, famished, weak, and a little squeamish from the sour caramel smell of her shirt she’d endured for the last few hours, she followed the herd of passengers to the concourse and popped into one of the airport souvenir shops to buy a T-shirt with swirling red letters on the front that said “Music City.” She went into the bathroom and changed, stopping at her reflection in the mirror. The sight took her back to her youth when she’d lived in jeans and T-shirts. With a punch of nostalgia, she pulled the hem together and tied it in a knot the way she had when she was a girl, so it didn’t get in the way when she was at her potter’s wheel creating her latest masterpiece. Pop had found the old contraption in the attic of their 1820s farmhouse when they moved in, and he’d restored it with her. For Christmas that year, he’d gotten her a small kiln that they kept in the shed out back. She’d lost count of how many bowls and vases she’d made over the years.

Meet Me At Christmas
Written By Jenny Hale
Review By Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank Jenny Hale and Harpeth Road Press for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

Oh you know it is beginning to feel a lot like the holiday season when Jenny Hale releases her latest book Meet Me At Christmas!! Jenny writes beautiful stories that come from her heart and flow onto the pages. Meet Me At Christmas will put a smile on your face, love in your heart, catch you off guard and maybe even tear up a bit.

Stella’s career path and her storyline along with it totally fascinated and intrigued me greatly! No other author that I have read has ever chosen this field for their character. It was one of the main aspects that hooked me into the storyline. I would love to learn how Jenny came up with the inspiration for that particular storyline.

Jenny’s tackles many very important issues and topics in Meet Me At Christmas.

With Meet Me At Christmas we were blessed to meet so many characters with multiple storylines all wrapped into one book! I would love to see a spin off book of Lily and all her adventures!

Meet Me At Christmas I can just see Jenny's next Christmas movie on Hallmark!! I know I will watch it!
