(The Bar Lies Series, #1)
Publication date: June 20th 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Troy
I was the walking tragedy she couldn’t even remember.
It had been almost fifteen years since I’d seen Alessa Crawford. The last time seared into my memory with the strongest pain and hatred a person could possess.
Seeing her again was like a shot of adrenaline and made those previous feelings seem minor in comparison.
A plan took shape quickly when I saw her sitting at a table in my bar.
A plan that would finally give me peace.
Until I wasn’t so sure anymore.
I fought against her being different from the girl who had become the villain of my story.
I refused to let her win that fight.
I had resolve.
Surprisingly, I also had second thoughts.
Hindsight’s always 20/20.
And always too late.

Alessa
I was sleeping with an enemy I didn’t even know I had.
After my marriage collapsed, I moved back in with my dad. Back to my childhood home, a place weighed down with sadness and loss.
I had work, my best friend, and my sister and her family.
And then Troy made me an offer I didn’t want to refuse.
It was good timing. I was ready to move on.
So, for once in my life, I took the good offered to me.
My body came alive under his touch, and I saw a glimpse of a life I hadn’t had the chance to live.
Troy was taking, too, and with sweet lies and a hard body, he took parts of me I never planned to give.
It’s true what they say about there being a thin line between love and hate.
I just didn’t know which one would save me.

“Not her,” I demanded through gritted teeth, slowly peeling my fingers away from my palm.

His exasperated breath was the only sign that he’d heard me before he said, “Alexa, make it louder. A little more.” Once the music volume in the room was louder, he walked back to me. “Why, man? What’s your issue?”

All my fingers finally opened, the last one painfully so. I used my left hand and scrubbed down my face. “Just trust me.” This whole situation suddenly exhausted me.

Theo crossed his arms. “You know I do, but you have to trust me too. You are the last person I expected to walk in here and start insulting fucking clients, so explain or get the hell out so I can go back there and do my damnedest to get her to see me again.”

A frustrated growl rose from deep in my chest, and I looked up to the ceiling, forcing myself to take a deep breath. He deserved to know. “Les is her.” I waited for a response. When none came, I forced myself to look back at him and clarified, “Les is . . . Alessa.”

A second of confusion lingered before realization sparked in his eyes. His frustration dropped away and his mouth pinched as he rocked back a step. “No fucking way. What are the odds?”

“Never thought there were any odds. Never thought she’d be back around here.”

“I wonder why she—”

“No.” My voice was sharp, my anger rising all over again. “Don’t wonder shit. Just ink her friend and get her the fuck outta here.”

I stormed out the door, needing space and air and a goddamn deep breath that wasn’t tainted with any part of her. My hands touched the leather of the seat of my bike, palms flush against it, and my chin craning up, opening my airway. I inhaled the light smell of tacos from the truck a block over and watched the streetlight go from yellow to red. My fingers traced the custom stitching in the leather a bit harder as I tried to even my breaths.

Even with all the time that had passed and life that had been lived—it didn’t matter. I would have known it was her if only one of my senses had been working.

She smelled the same as she had all those years ago. I laughed in the least humorous way possible because, as much as I loathed it, she was every bit as beautiful as she’d been in high school too. Just like back then, she sure as hell didn’t know it now either.

I leaned over and spit on the sidewalk. All I needed to do was ride away and pretend as if the last ten minutes never happened. My freedom was right in front of me, and I should climb on, gun the engine, and open the throttle.

I shouldn’t go back in.

With my jaw locked tight, I turned away from my bike and headed down the alley between the shop and another building. Then, as quietly as I could, I unlocked the emergency exit and let myself into the back of the shop.

In the small, narrow space of the hallway, I could smell her. I inhaled deeply because my brain still wasn’t working, and I let myself think it fueled my hate, that it was only disgust punching at my skull. I refused to acknowledge that there was anything but deeply rooted loathing making my skin tight or that I didn’t care at all about what she may say or do while here. I told myself it was not because of her that I parked myself in the chair in the office, which was right next to Theo’s station, and left the door wide open while I pretended to look at his books.

I had to make myself believe it all because I’d only ever been weak once before in my life.

Once.

For the woman named Les in room five.

The girl who I knew as Alessa.

What’s a girl to do when her aim is true?

As a registered nurse at the Boise VA Hospital, Grace Marshall is devoted to her patients, but some wounds require more than medical care. A patient too stubborn and angry to accept the help he needs storms out of her exam room, ruffling her feathers. Yet, when the man returns to apologize, something about him tugs at her heart.

Levi Gibson left for war young and idealistic but returned from Vietnam with physical scars and a haunted soul. He tries to banish the darkness brewing inside him with hard work on his family’s potato farm, but it’s a young nurse’s kindness that brings unexpected light and joy into his life. If Levi can open up to Grace and let her see his pain, could she be the key that unlocks a future full of hope instead of mere survival?

After her father sends Grace a legendary pistol, target practice provides an excuse to spend time with Levi during the summer of 1972. As his shadows overwhelm him, it will take far more than a lucky shot for Grace to hit love’s mark.

Goodreads / Amazon / Bookbub

EXCERPT:

She straightened in time to see Levi sprinting through the rain with a vase of flowers.

His cowboy hat had kept his head dry, but Grace was sure she could wring water out of his shirt when he stepped inside. A vision of him shirtless made warmth sear her cheeks as he walked over to her and held out the vase.

“Here,” he said, holding it out to her.

She stared at the vase brimming with fragrant lilacs, white tulips, and pink peonies. The arrangement was stunning, but she had no idea why he’d bring it to her.

Hesitantly, she reached out for the vase. “What’s this?”

“An apology,” he said, removing his hat as she took the vase from him.

She held the vase against her mid-section, longing to bury her nose in the divine lilacs. She’d always loved the scent of them when they bloomed in the spring. On their dairy farm, they had several old bushes that bloomed along the back fence. She’d missed them since she’d moved to Boise. The only chance she got to smell flowers now was while walking in the park, or when one of her fellow nurses received them as a gift.

“An apology?” she asked, giving the cute cowboy a curious glance.

“For Friday. I was rude, and I’m sorry. It wasn’t anything you did,” he admitted, appearing both nervous and repentant.

She ignored the way he’d shoved his left hand into the front pocket of his jeans to hide his injury. His right hand clenched his hat, as though he was anxious. Uncertain.

“Do you really think I’m too young, incompetent, and impertinent to be a nurse?” she asked, keeping her expression unreadable, but she shifted her posture, cocking one hip defiantly.

A slow grin spread across his face as he watched her, appearing to keenly observe her every move. His head shook from side to side. “No, ma’am. I think you are more than qualified to do your job, and you were not impertinent. I’m truly sorry for the way I behaved when I was here. The way I acted was unnecessary and unkind, and it bugged me all weekend that I’d been that way with you. Truly, I’m sorry.”

“You’re forgiven,” Grace said, grinning at him and surrendering to her need to sniff the blooms. She closed her eyes to better savor the fragrance, then opened them to find Levi watching her. “I love lilacs.”

His grin broadened. “We have a bunch of them at the farm just starting to bloom. The tulips were on the north side of the house, or they’d likely be gone for the season.”

“It’s a magnificent bouquet. Do you need the vase back?” she asked.

“No. Ma has dozens of them. She gets the credit for arranging the flowers, though. She said to tell you that she did a better job of raising me than you might have previously considered and to please not hold my behavior against her.”

“I did have a few thoughts about that this weekend.” Grace smiled and hugged the vase a little tighter. “I do thank you, Sergeant Gibson, for these lovely blooms, but I should get to work.”

“I didn’t mean to keep you. I just wanted to apologize and ask for your forgiveness.”

“You are forgiven.”

“Thank you,” he said, taking a step back toward the door.

Grace had never, not once in her life, considered asking a guy on a date, but a sense of panic welled in her at the thought of not seeing Levi again soon.

The words spilled out of her, leaving her unable to stuff them back into her mouth. “Are you busy next Saturday?” she heard herself ask.

Levi appeared as shocked by the question as Grace felt.

“No. Not really. Did you have something in mind?”

EXCERPT:

I was walking along a peaceful path in the woods when a branch snapped beneath my barefoot. Birds flew away, shrieking in the distance. For some strange reason, I was not wearing any shoes. I wiggled my toes and continued my peaceful journey. But I came to a screeching halt when I noticed splotches of blood on the ground. My heart raced, and I thought about turning back. But my feet continued to carry me forward. The splotches were getting larger and becoming more frequent as I walked. And then I saw it. I saw him lying there on the ground in a pool of blood. Mateo. He was lying motionless with his eyes closed. Squealing louder than I’ve ever squealed in my life, I sprinted over to him. “No. No. Teo,” I screamed, rocking his body back and forth with force. I lifted his shirt to see where the blood was coming from. But there was no indication of where it was escaping. His body was intact. I checked his neck for a pulse. Pulse, pulse, where the heck was his pulse? I checked his inner wrist. I couldn’t feel it. “Where is it?” I sobbed, clasping his shirt. “Teo. Please. Please. Come back to me.”

The Good Doctor: An addictive and gripping psychological thriller with a killer twist

I finally have everything I’ve ever wanted: a career saving lives, my dream home among the pines, and my caring fiancĂ©, Elton. He doesn’t know about my past. And I’ll do anything to keep it that way…
I’m so excited for my life with Elton—we’ve even discussed which room would make the perfect nursery. And we’re working together in our new jobs in the ICU at Portland General hospital.
But when I walk in on my first day, I see my ex-husband Jameson. His familiar broad shoulders are unmistakable in his white doctor’s coat. The shock knocks the air from my lungs.
I’m thrown back to the moment Jameson and I gathered around that hospital bed as the steady beeping on the monitor slowed.
We did something unforgivable that day.
And for the first time, I saw who Jameson truly was.
The truth scared me more than I can explain.
So I ran.
If Jameson tells Elton what I did, I’ll lose everything. Will he destroy my new, perfect life? Is he still a danger to the innocent patients all around us? And how far will I have to go to stop him?
The Good Doctor is a totally twisty, rollercoaster ride of a psychological thriller that will have you glued to the pages late into the night. Fans of Freida McFadden, My Lovely Wife and The Couple Next Door will love it!

The Good Doctor

Review By

Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank Jessica Payne and Bookouture for providing me with the book so I can bring you this review.

O.M.G!! I am a HUGE fan of Medical Psychological Thrillers and OMG Jessica Payne The Good Doctor is my favorite in this genre!! If I could give this book 100 stars I did! I am totally in love with this book!! It is intense, suspenseful, jaw dropping, mind blowing, nail biting, totally twisted and even educational! I loved this book and could not get enough!!

It is totally appreciated that Jessica was upfront and honest about the trigger warnings in this book! Many authors don’t address their triggers.

As stated earlier I am a huge fan of this genre! As a former Medical Office Assistant and Medical Assistant I totally loved everything about this book. Not only that but I was able to understand what was going on in the book. What I really loved is even if you are not medical savvy Chloe educates her readers of what the medical terms are.

The Good Doctor touches on a very controversial topic that no author has ever touched! It was one of the aspects that drew me in! I am dying to know where Jessica got the inspiration for this book!

Oh Snap I would NEVER EVER want Jamison as my Doctor!! I would totally run far away from the hospital! Ohh he was super evil and creepy!!

There are so many moments in this book where I was totally stunned, shocked, my jaw wide open speechless! Never ever in my career as a book reviewer has a book totally engulfed me into a story!

OMG I LOVED Chloe’s character!! She was one strong cookie for so many many reasons!!

This is one book that NEEDS to be a Netflix series ASAP!! It is a show that I would totally binge watch!

The steamy and addictive enemies-to-lovers romcom that you won’t want to miss!

MELODY
The last man I want to be stranded with on the way to my best friend’s wedding in Provence is her annoying brother: personal trainer Nate.

But thanks to an epic storm, I’m stuck in a hotel room with the most arrogant man on the planet.

And there’s only one bed.

I should hate him. Especially given our history. But with his gorgeous brown eyes, panty-melting smile and muscular body, Nate’s hotness is undeniable.

After getting my heart broken, I’m supposed to avoid bad boys like him and set an example to my daughter by looking for a real relationship.

But the more time we spend together as we race to the South of France, the sweeter he is to me, and I start to realise there’s more to Nate than meets the eye.

Which only makes him harder to resist…

NATE
If I’d known the owner of that fine arse was my sister’s irritating best friend Melody, I would’ve kept on walking.

And I wouldn’t have missed the last flight to France.

Now we’re battling to make it to the chateau. And I’m fighting to get Melody’s perfect fire-engine-red lips and smoking hot curves out of my head.

The attraction between us is electric. But Melody’s looking for the fairy tale. And I can’t do that serious relationship stuff again. Not after last time.

I should stay away.

Trouble is, the more I discover how strong and badass she is, the more I crave her…

My French Wedding Date is a steamy, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, best friend’s brother, reverse age-gap, single mum, dual POV romcom. Gorgeous happily-ever-after guaranteed!

Read as a standalone novel or as book five in the My Ten-Year Crush series.
All books in the series are available to read in Kindle Unlimited. Book one (My Ten-Year Crush) is also currently part of Prime Reading (UK).

About Me

Hi there! Very nice to meet you.

Whilst I love every second of penning my novels, writing about myself isn’t so easy... Where to begin?

Okay, so I’m a forty-something Londoner who loves cake and has always had a burning desire to write a novel. But it wasn’t until January 2016 that I was driven to take the leap. A close friend suddenly passed away and realising that life was too short not to start pursuing my dream, I set myself a goal to become a published author. Two and a half years (plus bucket loads of blood, sweat and tears) later in July 2018, my first-ever shiny book, The Middle-Aged Virgin became available on Amazon. It was definitely a pinch-me-is-it-real moment!

Seven months later in February 2019, I published my second novel Only When It’s Love to rave reviews (read more here). My third book Losing My Inhibitions was released in June 2019 and novel number four, Love Offline followed in November 2019.

I write under the pen name Olivia Spring to spare the blushes of those who know me and may read the racy sex scenes included in my books. Becoming an author has always been a lifelong dream and as writing is now my full-time focus, I am finally fortunate enough to call my passion my career. That means I get to spend my days sitting at my desk or in the park (and occasionally, if I’m really lucky, on a nice Mediterranean beach!), creating cool characters and stories to share with you.

Thanks for your support. Words can’t describe how much I appreciate you buying my books and sending me lovely messages and emails letting me know how much you’ve enjoyed reading my novels. It’s because of you that I am able to do what I love for a living and for that I am eternally grateful.

Look out for more novels coming very soon…

First, I want to thank Olivia Spring for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review!

WOW!!! I just loved reading Melody’s and Nate’s story in Olivia Spring’s My French Wedding Date! This is her 5th book in the My Ten-Year Crush series. However, even though My French Wedding Date can be read as a standalone I highly suggest you read the whole series. This way you will get a better idea of their back story to where this story led up to. Trust me the whole series is a great one!

As with all of the books in her series you will be rolling on the floor laughing your booty off! At least I couldn’t stop laughing!

Ohh the sexual tension between Melody and Nate was incredibly intense!! It kept the story very exciting for so many reasons! Oh you will have a Koolaid grin on your face throughout this fun and easy read It was just what the Doctor ordered recovering from a kidney stone procedure!

The main mystery in this book was would these two get to the wedding in time! So many obstacles they faced just getting there!

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

After three hours on the road, we make a pitstop.

“At last!” he blurts, getting out of the car.

Then, I notice something I shouldn’t have. My hitchhiker stands with a slight groan, hand pressed against his right side. And as he stands, he reveals the inside of his jacket, and there it is—a shiny gun sitting in his pocket. My paranoid thoughts aren’t so paranoid after all.

It’s not rocket science to figure out where this equation leads. Nobody carries that kind of gun unless they are a criminal.

I’m going to die, sliced up by a crazy hitchhiker.

Can I handle this?

But then again, he’s hurt. Maybe he’s losing blood; maybe his life is in danger.

And mine?

He enters the convenience store. It’s almost comical; the way he walks, like he’s invincible. Professional criminal, tough as nails. And here I am, professionally screwed.

I imagine what they’ll say on the six o’clock news: “A young woman was found sliced up so her killer could make a house of cards out of the pieces…”

I can’t take my eyes off his form. The man stands tall, arrogant, his badass attitude taped to his face. He feels nothing.

Although, his eyes are more narrowed than before. He’s a human being. A wounded human being and I’m a nurse.

I fill up the car while chewing on my bottom lip. He heads toward the back of the building. My heart is pounding, unsure of what might happen next. I might have made a huge mistake. The options before me are unappealing—leave him there, join him, or wait for him to come back and pretend nothing’s wrong. I finish filling the gas tank and pay, trying my best to appear normal. The store is dimly lit and eerily quiet, adding to my growing uneasiness. A knot forms in my stomach as I push the door open, my heart trying to spread my ribs apart.

My eyes dart back and forth as I scan the aisles frantically, grabbing snacks and drinks, not knowing what the road ahead has in store.

As I approach the exit, my heart is in my throat. I can’t catch my breath, and I only hear an irregular heartbeat in my ears.

Shit, I’m having a panic attack.

Time slows as my legs weaken, and unwanted sweat rolls down my neck. My sweaty palms land on the door, but the ground drops from under me. My vision blurs, and I can’t breathe.

I can’t breathe. I’m going to pass out. Shit.

My phone’s ringtone blares. I don’t recognize the number.

“Yes,” I answer, my voice barely above a whisper.

An old voice comes through the line. I don’t recognize that, either.

“If you value your life, you’ll leave him,” the voice growls.

I glare at my phone.

I don’t even know if my life has any value at all.

“You have a few seconds to leave, Miss Milosh.”

The call disconnects, and my eyes flutter to my phone as it chimes again. Another ring announces an incoming text message, but I ignore it. I know what I need to do. I steel myself for the task ahead, fully aware I’m going to tread dangerous waters. One stop to grab my first aid box, and I’m thrilled.

Author Bio:

I'm Elsa Jacobs, indie author of contemporary romance from sweet and seductive to dark and gritty. All levels of steam.

A few years ago, I found myself obsessed with a bunch of characters and plots, swirling madness in my mind. The only reasonable cure was to write them all. In less than a year, I had written four draft. I had no intention of publishing because fear held me back, and I put them aside, unsure if they were worth sharing with the world.

Years passed, and I finally mustered the courage to read one of my drafts and spoke to an editor, sending them a chapter. The wait for their response was nerve-wracking.

But, as you can imagine, that one chapter led me on a journey that brought me here. And the story is about to be legendary.

My debut novel, Tale of an Anxious Heart, is a fast-paced and thrilling ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat with its twists and turns. This contemporary medium spice read is not your typical romance, featuring morally gray characters and a steamy, possessive alpha male hero who will leave you breathless.

But don't be fooled by the conventional tropes – My strong female hero is more than capable of holding her own and conquering inner demons as she embarks on a road trip that will change her life forever. Pick up Tale of an Anxious Heart today and discover why it can be challenging to pick up a hitchhiker...

There is a lot of excitement around the house for Little Aiden as he spends the day playing with Mommy and helping her with chores. Just like Little Aiden, toddlers go through many emotions throughout their day. It is important to accept these emotions and let your little ones know that you love them regardless of what they go through.

"I love you when you are crying."
"I love you when you are
happy."
"I love you when you are
angry too."

Little Aiden: A Love Book For Toddlers

Written by Albert and Anna Choi

Illustrated by Bettina Brasko

Review by Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank both Albert and Anna Choi for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

Ohh how can you not fall in love with Albert and Anna Choi’s son Little Aiden?! He is just the cutest little baby ever!! In this book Little Aiden: A Love Book For Toddlers Albert and Anna have help from the very talented Bettina Brasco as she shows us why we should fall in love with him. This is one of the cutest children series I have ever read and feel readers of all ages will get a kick out of it.

Albert and Anna would like to dedicate this book to their son Aiden.

I could not stop smiling throughout this book! Not to mention there were some scenes where I was just laughing out loud at. I could see why they went there but omg it was too funny!! I can see other little kids wanting to try to help.

It was too cute in the one picture where Anna was holding up her last book and Aiden in the next scene reading it. I thought that was very clever!

Needless to say I am a fan of Albert, Anna, Bettina and of course Little Aiden! I can’t wait to see what else this series has instore for him!
