Rose’s seat was still empty.
The human brain can hold on to many things simultaneously. For me, right now, it was six.
1. Rose wasn’t here, and wasn’t answering her phone.
2. Something terrible must have happened.
3. But she was probably just late.
4. How much longer could we wait? We’d already stalled for half an hour.
5. The guests were becoming restless. It wasn’t quite warm enough to be sitting outside for as long as this. And my son Edward on piano, bless him, only knew three tunes – ‘knew’ was a euphemism – which he’d been playing on rotation.
6. We should start, but how could I get married without my best friend there? Without knowing if she was OK?
