When a murder takes place in her luxurious suite, she figures it’s up to her to uncover the town’s secrets and find the killer.

EXCERPT:

Feeling much better about where she stood with Thorn as far as Thompson’s murder went, Jessica had the cop take her and Thorn back to her place to get her SUV. Upon hearing her enter the yard, Tracer, her beloved basset hound, came barreling out the dog door that had been incorporated into the back door.

Sudie followed close behind him, laughing. “He said you were back here, but I didn’t believe him. He always knows where his mama is.”

“Detective Thorn Wilder, this is my friend and housekeeper, Sudie. Sudie, meet Thorn.”

“Are you the one investigating what happened up at DeeDee’s place?”

“I am.”

“And you think Jessica had something to do with it? I wish Tracer was trained to attack; I’d have him bite you,” said Sudie.

“Not to worry,” said Jessica to Thorn. “The most Tracer would do is beat you to death with his tail or knock you down and drown you in drooly kisses. Other than that, he is completely harmless.”

“But that boy can track anything. If you need something followed, you get Jessica to lend you Tracer. He found a lost little girl last year. Everybody was so worried for her. By the time they caught up to him, he was bouncing and barking with her, and she was giggling away.”

“You trained your dog to track?” he said, kneeling down to offer his hand to Tracer to let him sniff it before giving him a tummy rub when the dog flipped over onto his back.

“It’s not hard with a basset. Their noses are the best in the business. They’re especially good at finding kids because they’re so non-threatening.”

Thorn stood up. “Are you saying that if we found some kind of scent item, we could use him to track something?”

“Not only that, you don’t have to have a scent item per se. If we let him sniff around that footprint, he’d probably be able to track where it went.”

“Good to know.”

I look into baby Fern’s crib, and my heart pounds. I’m her nanny, I was supposed to keep her safe. I hear the police downstairs, and the next words I hear make my legs buckle underneath me. ‘It was the nanny. She’s guilty’.

When I first walked into
Jake and Megan’s immaculate home, I felt totally at ease. Sitting in the crisp white living room, they held hands and talked lovingly about their baby girl, Fern.

As the weeks passed, I began to think I’d made a mistake in taking the job. Jake was overly friendly from the start, watching my every move and always offering to drop me home, even though it was out of his way. And Megan seemed to take pleasure in telling me off in front of her husband, blaming me for things I hadn’t done.

The first time I heard the Haringtons arguing behind the door to their bedroom, I heard my name mentioned, and then they went silent. I should have left right there and then.

Now, as I stand accused of something terrible, my whole past is revealed and the Haringtons admit to knowing every detail about why I was sacked from my last job.
We all have secrets, but little do they realise, I know theirs too…

With twist after twist, this is perfect for fans of The Housemaid, The Perfect Marriage and The Girl on the Train. A gripping thriller you don’t want to miss!

PROLOGUE
The word guilty hits me like a punch to my stomach and I feel myself reel. This isn’t supposed to happen. My lawyer said they would either have to convict me of murder or acquit me. He was confident they couldn’t return a guilty verdict; that there wasn’t enough evidence. My chest constricts painfully. ‘I didn’t do this.’ Bile burns the back of my throat and I choke the words out. Papers are being shuffled, gazes cast down, as if business is over. They’re going to take me back down to the cells. My life is over. I would rather it was over than be considered capable of this. Reality hits me as the officers flanking me close claustrophobically in on me. ‘This is wrong,’ I protest shakily. No one is listening. ‘You’ve got it wrong.’ My gaze swivels feverishly to the people who’ve condemned me. Some glance away. Some look uncomfortable. Some shoot daggers of pure hatred right through me. I don’t understand. What just happened? A lurch of terror clutches my insides and I look desperately at the man who assured me I would walk away. His face ashen, he averts his eyes, and hope dies inside me. Tell them. I gulp back the stone clogging my throat. He has to do something. The judge accepted the verdict but I don’t believe they proved it was me. They don’t know. Anything. At first they said she’d died of asphyxia due to an asthma attack. Then they said her airways hadn’t been narrowed or inflamed and concluded it was a subdural haematoma that had caused an underlying injury and pressure on the brain. The prosecution said the bleed had been caused by her being violently shaken. The forensic neuropathologist said he didn’t believe that she could have died from violent shaking. He said there was no spinal cord or neck damage, no bruising to her back or ribs to show she’d been grabbed. In his opinion, her brain injury could have been sustained by a blow to the head, but that could have occurred weeks before. The key word was could. They hadn’t known. It was the testimony of the person I’d trusted most in the world that had condemned me. He’d said he saw me bang her head on the side of her cot. How could he have? How could he have done that, given evidence against me as if I meant nothing to him? He knows me, knows that I could never be capable of such an atrocity. They asked me if I had shaken her. I had to tell the truth, but surely, I reasoned, they would see that it had happened instinctively. ‘She’d been crying,’ I told them. ‘And then she went quiet. I was scared for her. She wasn’t moving.’ I looked desperately around for understanding and found none. ‘I wasn’t sure she was even breathing. I shook her to try to wake her. She was in my arms,’ I added quickly as the jurors all breathed in sharply as one. ‘Her head was in the crook of my arm. I was trying to help her.’ My attempts to make them see fell on deaf ears. I even demonstrated how I’d held her that one time I had shaken her, glancing down at the ghost of her nestled close to me. As I looked up to see appalled faces, I knew that the jury was becoming hostile, a term my lawyer had used. I wish I hadn’t gone to the nursery so incensed. Wish to God I hadn’t drunk so much wine. The jury knew I had. Witness testimony confirmed I had. Soon the police were digging into my history, unearthing my past, my secrets and my lies. I had lied – I’d had no choice. I didn’t lie about this, though. I didn’t

In this inspiring memoir, Emily Falcon chronicles her lifelong journey with a congenital cardiac condition. In 1982, at seven weeks old, she had a heart attack that destroyed forty percent of the left side of her heart. This was her entry into a world of multiple cardiac procedures, surgeries, and hospitalizations, and a later diagnosis of glaucoma. Balancing these serious conditions defined her life.

Falcon’s memoir is a story of survival and how her physical situation shaped and limited her. She never surrendered, never wavered. She always forged onward. Falcon intends this story to be a helpful resource to families, caregivers, and physicians who want to gain insight into a patient’s point of view.

In 2017, after a lifetime of feeling that nothing could ever change, Falcon had a second open-heart surgery. This procedure allowed her to participate in a 5K race a mere eight months later. She was no longer stuck on the sidelines. She encourages her readers to advocate for themselves, believe in their abilities, never be afraid to test their boundaries, and feel motivated to make changes in their lives.

Excerpt

What is it like to experience the strength and vitality of youth for the first time at age
thirty-five? This is a story of my personal “Benjamin Button” journey. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s
short story “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” Benjamin is born an old man and experiences life in reverse, taking on new abilities as he becomes younger. In my case, as a result of a life-altering surgery, my abili- ties continue to develop, and I feel younger and more fit every
day.

I went from being unable to run more than a few yards to developing as an athlete who
participated in my first athletic event, a 5K race, just eight months after open-heartsurgery. I
chose to move away from the comfort of my medical team and family in Boston to Alaska, where physical challenges were part of everyday life. Whether hiking in Denali National Park, getting lost in the woods, or whitewater rafting in freezing rapids, I found my endurance tested in ways it had never been previously.

I have never had a normal life. At seven weeks old, in 1982, I had a heart attack that destroyed forty percent of the left side of my heart. My heart condition forever altered the course of my life and led to two open-heart surgeries, one at age six and another at age thirty-five.

A little over a year after my second surgery, my cardiac surgeon gave a presentation that featured my medical journey. After the talk, many audience members came up to me and told me they were inspired by my story. I didn’t understand why, or why they called me a hero. I felt like all I had done was go on living and trying, which I did not feel made me stand out. One audience member shared her fears and hesitation about trying to go on a
hike. I responded, “If I can do it, you can too!” Taken aback for a moment, she then agreed to give hiking a try. For the first time, I realized how my story could inspire others.

This book is about my experiences and how I have felt lead- ing a life with complex, chronic
medical issues. Unlike many surviors who have experienced sudden traumatic illness or accidents that forced them to live with newly acquired limitations, I have an uncommon perspective, from both a child’s and an adult’s viewpoint, because I have experienced a rare and chronic illness from
birth.

At times, it might seem discouraging to read about everything I went through, and it might seem as if life will never improve, but it does. The skills and knowledge of my medical team, endless support from my family, and my own dogged perseverance enabled me to live a life no one ever dreamed was possible. No one and nothing, least of all my body, is holding me back anymore. I want to fully explore my abilities after a lifetime of restrictions and live my motto to the fullest: “Don’t waste a second.” By sharing aspects of my journey, I hope my insights can encourage people who doubt their own resilience.

Today, I live in a different world, one that is full of poten- tial. My wish is to show people who
hold back from experiences that maybe they can make a different choice. People with chronic illness can be inspired and learn to advocate for themselves. They can appreciate their level of health and not take it for granted. All opportunities, both big and small, should be embraced. Neverwaste a moment and don’t let life pass you by!

 About the author

Emily Falcon lives in Massachusetts. At seven weeks old, she had a heart attack and was diagnosed with anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA). This led to two open-heart surgeries, one at age six and another at age thirty-five. She loves travel and animals, both of which have helped her get through difficult times. While living a constrained life, Emily has sought out adventures whenever she can, such as trekking up volcanoes to observe mountain gorillas in Uganda, volunteering with cheetahs and baboons in Namibia, playing with wolves at the Arctic Circle, and eating with orangutans in Singapore. She is now an athlete who participates in a weekly run club and runs in 5K races throughout the year. She hopes to inspire others who have health limitations to never waste a moment and not let life pass them by.

Emily Falcon
Review By
Heidi Lynn’s Book Reviews

First, I want to thank Emily Falcon and Baby Heart Press for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

WOW!!! Emily Falcon, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger girl! You are one incredibly brave to open up and share your inspirational story with us in From the Sidelines to the Finish Line! Your story made a huge impact on me as there were some important life lessons that I personally needed to hear. From the Sidelines to the Finish Line is a beautifully written book that will touch a lot of people.

Russ Hoyt President and CEO of The Hoyt Foundation wrote a very beautiful forward for Emily’s book. His story of his brother Rick totally pulled hard on my heartstrings as I have a family member who is a quadriplegic and would do anything to make him feel less disabled. The Hoyt Foundation is an incredible agency that does so much for the disabled community!

From the Sidelines to the Finish Line Emily we get to see all the ups and downs she has experienced throughout her life. She also shares some pictures with us as well.

I appreciated Emily educating her readers by sharing some medical facts, medical terminology and medical definitions so her readers could understand more.

All the pop culture references I totally loved and so envious that she saw Lady Gaga and S Club 7 in concert!

From the Sidelines to the Finish Line is a beautifully written story that had me wanting to jump into the story many times to give her a hug! If you love medical memoirs like I do you need to add this to your TBR list!
